I am an English subject specialist, academic researcher, and full-time teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (DfE). As an academic, I pursue rigorous scholarship to get closer to the texts and authors that inspire me. As an educator, I invite my students into this process of critical inquiry, helping them achieve excellence as scholars themselves.
I offer tutoring in the following areas:
Academic research: My students benefit from working with a subject specialist: I hold a degree in English Language and Literature from Oxford, where I developed a thorough grounding in the English literary canon, from Old English to contemporary texts. My academic work has been interdisciplinary, connecting disparate languages and historical periods: my undergraduate dissertation, which was awarded a first-class mark, explored the links between Japanese medieval literature and Anglophone Modernism. In my MA in Medieval and Renaissance Studies, I explored epistolary fiction and letter-writing in Chaucer and Ovid.
Teaching qualifications: I am a qualified English teacher (QTS), with classroom experience teaching students of all abilities. I have taught all of the core texts within the national GCSE and A-Level curricula in depth, and have up-to-date knowledge of statutory exam requirements. All of my tutoring students receive tuition tailored to their individual academic goals. My experience as a classroom teacher allows students to supplement their school studies at school with targeted feedback and one-on-one help from an experienced teacher.
In Y10, I moved from the IB MYP to the UK GCSE curriculum with just eight months to prepare for exams. I achieved 10 A*s and 1 A, the highest GCSE attainment at my school. My experience of both IB and GCSE/A-Level curricula makes me well-placed to support international students switching between different systems, particularly in preparation for competitive admissions.
My tutoring services: Before tutoring begins, I provide students and parents with a personalised scheme of work, outlining the planned lesson content and detailing how the student’s progress will be assessed. I base this scheme of work on the student’s academic goals and examples of recent work, and establishing it is central to my tutoring process. It clarifies the aims of tutoring, tracks the student’s progress, and measures the effectiveness of the sessions.
Outside of teaching, I love engaging with all aspects of the arts. I frequently attend plays and dance performances in London, and have written reviews of these productions.
I believe that food is one of the best ways to understand a culture, second only to language. I am currently teaching myself Arabic, with the aim to one day cook the perfect maqluba. As a native speaker of Japanese, I follow my mother's recipes, but have unfortunately fallen short of her version of okonomiyaki - this is an ongoing mission for 2025!
